Digestion slows down with the release of Cortisol, a steroid hormone. It diverts the energy to the areas that actually need a requirement. Along with the digestion process, there occurs a slowdown in the formation of Hydrochloric Acid. This can lead to the possibility of acid reflux, wherein, the acid level in your stomach gets low.
The rise in blood pressure
The body maximizes the heart rate when you undergo the stress level along with the compression of blood vessels. It diverts the oxygen flow to muscles so that they can perform the required action. It leads to higher blood pressure. When the stress turns out to be chronic, simultaneously blood pressure also becomes chronic. High blood pressure can expand the risk of strokes or heart attacks.
Low immune system
Stress can stimulate the immune system of your body. It is termed as a defense mechanism which safeguards you from infections or reduces the time to heal a wound. The longer is the chronic stress, the weaker is the immune system. Stress can weaken your immune system and you become easily prone to bacteria, fungal, or viruses borne infections.
Gain in weight
When you are prone to an excess amount of stress, your body tends to release insulin, which can, in turn, increase your appetite. With the release of Cortisol hormones by the adrenal glands, your body requires a larger amount of fatty food or carbohydrates. These can be stored in form of energy. Along with an increase in chronic stress, your need for carb or fatty food intake also increases. Because the fat cells are sensitive to the Cortisol impacts, the weight gain takes place around your abdomen.
Loss of memory
Chronic stress can have a damaging effect on your brain and the formulation of new brain cells gets slow down. It leads to the shrinking of your brain. Hippocampus, which is a part of the brain gets damaged because of the Cortisol hormones. This part of the part is accountable for learning, memory, or managing emotions. The brain damage can be terrific as it might cause memory loss, etc.
One should keep it a priority to manage their stress level constantly so as to eradicate the occurring of above-mentioned health issues. Practicing yoga and performing healthy exercise can reduce the stress level and will prevent the hormone fluctuations.
